Neville Chamberlain
When the Secoond World War began in September 1939, the Prime Minister of the UK was Neville Chamberlain. he had tried for many years to appease Hitler and Germany. Apparently to no avail. Within months of the war starting, he was replaced as PM by Winston Churchill. Churchill took a very different view to Chamberlain and, whatever the cost, Churchill would not attempt to appease Hitler, despite attempts by some in his Government to do so. Because of his stance, Churchill was very popular and Chamberlain was ridiculed. However, it is very important to appreciate the role that Chamberlain played. Whilst Chamberlain was busy giving in to Hitler's demands, it meant that Hitler could not start his war. During this lengthy period, it enabled the armaments factories of the UK to build many aircraft, guns and tanks. Without that period of "peace", it is unlikely that the UK would have had the neccessary aircraft to defend itself during the Battle of Britain in 1940. |
