R J Mitchell R J Mitchell was the chief designer of the Spitfire. This was the fighter aircraft that was credited as winning the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe of Germany. Ironically and sadly, Mitchell died in 1937, some 3 years before his remarkable aircraft acheived its finest hour.
